Why is digital switchover happening?

The digital TV switchover is Government policy. It will mean that almost everyone will be able to receive digital TV through an aerial (Freeview)

Digital TV also uses less broadcast space which means that after switchover, there will be more room for even more channels and High Definition TV

To keep your TV service you will need to replace or convert your existing TVs to digital before switchover date and re-tune them

When do I switch?

When your home switches to digital will depend on where you live in the UK. In the London and Southern area (served by Crystal Palace Transmitter) it is happening in two stages on 4th and 18th April 2012
You will need to re-tune your TVs when this happens
Most households have now received the info/help leaflet

Please use our postcode checker if you are not sure

What is hd?

HD Stands for High Definition
It offers better picture quality than standard definition by way of using more pixels on your TV screen. This makes your picture look much sharper and cleaner

You will see much better background detail as well as brighter more vivid colours. HD is most noticeable when you switch between a High Definition (HD) and Standard Definition (SD) picture

What happens to my old TV?

Your old TV should be fine after switchover and can be used for freeview by installing a freeview box providing it has the right connections
If you wish to update your set you will find that all new TV's have freeview built-in and can be picked up at a reasonable cost
Your TV shop will be able to help you dispose of and recycle your old TV
